What "buying a domain" actually means
A domain is not bought but registered, for a year or longer.
Registration gives you the right to use a name as long as you renew it. You pay yearly for that. For many extensions the first year costs the same as the renewal, for some the registration is an introductory price and the renewal is higher. You see both in the table before you order.
What matters is who is entered as the holder and who controls the auth code. With us you register the domain in your own name and fetch the auth code yourself in the portal at any time. You are never locked in.
A domain without hosting is perfectly fine. You can reserve it and connect it later to a website, mail hosting or your game server.

- Good for projects with a European audience or when the .de is already taken.

- Known internationally. Sensible for brands and anything that should work across borders.
- .gg, .games
- Popular with gaming communities and servers. Memorable but pricier. Check the renewal before you order.
- .dev, .app, .io
- Common with developers, tools and start-ups. .dev and .app by the way enforce https.

The portal gives you the tools that are usually hidden in a registrar back end.

- You edit A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, NS and CAA yourself. Changes are usually visible after a few minutes.
- Nameservers
- Use our default nameservers or enter your own, for example when you run DNS at an external service.
- Auto-renewal
- So your domain does not expire by accident. You can switch it off at any time.
- WHOIS privacy and DNSSEC
- Your contact details stay protected where the extension allows it. Our support sets up DNSSEC on request.
- Auth code
- For a move away you fetch the code yourself in the portal, no questions asked.

Can I really buy a domain or only rent it?
Strictly speaking a domain is never bought but registered and renewed yearly. As long as the renewal runs, it is yours. With the auth code you can take it to another provider at any time.
