Minecraft guide · Memory
How much memory does your Minecraft server need?
Player count is only one factor. World size, view distance, plugins and mods together determine the useful amount of memory.
- Paper: from 6 GB
- 8 GB recommended
- Allow for plugins

01
A practical starting table
Start here, then measure the real workload.
| Players | Server type | Starting value | Assumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | Paper / Vanilla | 6 GB | Small world, few plugins |
| 5–15 | Paper | 8 GB | Normal view distance, common plugins |
| 15–30 | Paper | 10–12 GB | More chunks, farms and plugins |
| 30+ | Paper / network | 12–16+ GB | Measure CPU and memory separately |
These values are guidance, not a guarantee. A pregenerated world with ten players can run more smoothly than a two-player server generating new terrain with heavy plugins.
02
What actually uses memory?
Four factors matter more than a simple players-times-X formula.
- View and simulation distance
- More loaded chunks mean more blocks, entities and game logic kept active.
- World generation
- Exploring new terrain creates short, heavy load peaks. Pregenerating the world makes usage easier to predict.
- Plugins and mods
- Quality matters more than the count. One inefficient plugin can consume more resources than many small utilities.
- Entities and farms
- Mobs, hoppers, redstone and large farms increase both memory use and CPU work.
03
Increase memory only with evidence
More memory is useful when memory is the bottleneck.
Start with the value that matches your setup. Watch memory and CPU while several players explore, teleport and use farms. Leave headroom for peaks and backups.
If memory stays healthy but TPS drops, investigate timings, plugins, entities, view distance and CPU load before adding more memory.

Frequently asked questions
Short answers without sales myths.
01
Is 4 GB enough for a Minecraft server?
For a current Paper server, that is only sensible for very small and lean setups. Our active Minecraft Java template therefore starts at 6 GB.
02
Do more players automatically require more memory?
Usually, but not proportionally. View distance, world generation, farms and plugins can matter more than a few extra players.
03
Does more memory automatically improve TPS?
No. If the CPU, a plugin or world generation is the bottleneck, additional memory does not fix the cause.
04
How can I tell that the server lacks memory?
Common signs are memory staying near its limit, long garbage-collection pauses, out-of-memory crashes or severe delays while loading new chunks.
